Curriculum Statement 2014

From September 2014 there is an expectation from the government for all mainstream primary schools to deliver the new National Curriculum. We have therefore adapted our School curriculum accordingly to ensure that we meet the current aims and statutory requirements.

 Curriculum Provision at Great Kingshill Church of England Primary School

Our curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum (2014), we enhance this with planned opportunities that make up the wider school curriculum. Learning is always exciting and in a meaningful context for children. Where commonality exists between subjects, learning is linked and lessons taught using a cross-curricular approach. Where this is not achievable subjects are taught discretely.

We place a strong emphasis on the development of the basic skills necessary to be confident independent learners and successful adults. Children rapidly begin to read in our Reception class by following a programme called 'Letters and Sounds.' All children engage in a daily literacy skills session where they develop their reading and comprehension skills in addition to developing a command of all aspects of the English language. In addition, all children take part in a daily English and Mathematics lesson. 

At Great Kingshill Church of England Primary School children develop a strong sense of moral purpose in addition to a respect and understanding of people who have different characteristics to themselves, whether that be age, disability, gender, race or sexuality. A rigorous, well planned curriculum, delivered by excellent staff in an ethos which is caring and supportive enables our pupils to be well rounded, empathetic young people who have a thirst for learning and respect for all around them.

Religious Education is delivered through the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus.

 The curriculum at Great Kingshill Church of England Primary School aims to:

  • Embed skills to prepare children for further learning and life in 21st century Britain.
  • Take learning beyond the classroom.
  • Inspire children to develop a love of learning
  • Develop children to become reflective learners who have a sense of responsibility for their own learning and development.
  • Build confidence and motivation within our children.
  • Nurture children who understand the importance of perseverance, resilience and tolerance.
  • Enable children to use their acquired skills and knowledge to observe, question and think.
  • Learn to value others, their views, cultures and beliefs.


 Early Years Foundation Stage

There are seven areas of learning and development.

 All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

 These three areas, known as the prime areas, are:

• Communication and language

• Physical development

• Personal, social and emotional development.

 Additionally there are four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

• Literacy;

• Mathematics;

• Understanding the world; and

• Expressive arts and design.

 Whole school curriculum enhancement

The curriculum is enhanced by using visits and speakers whenever possible. We aim that each class should have one of these enhanced opportunities each term. Each year there is the opportunity for the children to enjoy Forest Schools.

 There are opportunities for the children to take responsibilities within their class and the whole school. Each class has children who have monitor roles and across the whole school children can be School Information Officers, School Council members, House Captains, Sports Captains or Eco Warriors, depending on their year group.

We participate in a variety of musical and sporting events during the year and all pupils are encouraged to develop their confident through performances to a large audience.

 Focus Weeks

Some aspects of the curriculum are delivered through focus weeks and days. The timetable is suspended and activities are focused on a key theme. For example art week and science week.

 Extended School opportunities

The school offers a variety of clubs for children to participate in during and after school. These include football, dance, judo, netball, choir and singing.
